Crafting Makes Everything Better, Even A Good Night’s Sleep

The holidays are a great time to pick up crafting projects that make you feel good, focus and get the Zzz you need.

The last few weeks of the year are always crazy ones! Our calendars fill up quickly, and our year-end to-do lists seem to be never ending. It can be difficult to find time to relax during the hectic holiday season. It is a challenge to prioritize the cherished “me time” we all desire when there is so much to do, and so much emphasis on giving, and doing for others.

I have found using this time of year to tap into my creative side by working on home projects and crafts is a great way to make myself and others feel good. Creativity can help focus your mind, and have calming effects on your mind and body. When I feel like I have done something fun and productive, I feel more relaxed and satisfied. Not to mention, finding ways to do this while also spending time with my family and loved ones creates memories that you can cherish forever.

One of my favorite memories around this time of year was making holiday ornaments with my grandma, Lottie Laskowski. I was very fortunate to live only a block away from Grandma Lottie growing up in Dolton, a south suburb of Chicago. We would jump into Grandma’s 2-door, sky blue, Ford Maverick, and head down to the LeeWards Craft Store to buy ornament kits. These kits were very popular, and each kit included a foam shape, pins, sequence, beads and ribbons. We’d spend hours focused, yet together, making these ornaments which I continue to use, and lovingly display on my own tree each year.

Here are a few ways you can build some memories while remaining cool, calm, and collected this season:

Making a craft as a gift

Looking to stay at home and find creative ways to pass the time rather than fighting the mall crowds? Go old school this year and create something that will make someone else’s day! A fun at-home project could make for a great holiday gift, especially in the year that is 2020, to connect and uplift others’ spirits along with your own. Not exactly an artist? Here are 75 ideas for easy DIY gifts you can make at home that will be sure to help you relax, and put a smile on a loved one’s face!

Crafting time with your kids

This year may have been more family time than any of us bargained for – but the year is not over yet! Looking for new, fun ways to mix things up while spending quality time together? In addition to baking cookies and decorating the house, look for some fun crafts to make with your kids this season. This is a great way to keep the kids busy while staying home, and can act as a therapeutic activity for the parents, too! Relax, pour the kids some hot coco (and maybe some wine for yourself) and unwind with one of these 50 easy crafts to make with kids.

Fun project for the home

With nowhere else to go but stay home for the holidays, it is the perfect time to finally do those projects around the house you have been saying you would get to for years! Whether it is painting a room, creating some décor, or vamping up your bedroom environment, home improvements are a great way to rejuvenate and restore all those areas in the home that have been nagging at you, and get prepared for the New Year. Check out these easy DIY home decor ideas to vamp up your interior design, and refresh your space!

If ending the year with a fresh, new cozy look for your bed is on the list, you’ll love the beauty and functionality Pottery Barn’s SleepSmart Fresh Zone Duvet will bring to your sleep environment. It’s super fluffy, oversized so it will drape nicely to cover your mattress or fit into a favorite duvet cover, and the odor absorption as well as antimicrobial qualities will keep it smelling fresh longer. Plus, if you’re a hot sleeper who needs more weight to sleep under than a blanket or lightweight duvet would provide, this product will be perfect for you. I designed it with technology that actively dissipate excess heat that is normally associated with bulky comforters. You will stay cool, comforter and asleep longer.

Get crafty, create memories and have a great holiday by indulging in a little self-care and resting time. Your friends and family will thank you!
