Pillow Fight or Delight?

Tricks to determine if it is time to get a new pillow, and how to choose the best one for you.

Are you getting the feeling you might need a new pillow? Not excited about the thought of picking one out? With all the choices available today, it can often be overwhelming. Visiting the bedding department at your favorite store you are greeted with sea of white products. I can absolutely appreciate how narrowing down to one or two pillows to take home might seem challenging.

As you may recall from a previous post, as a pillow enthusiast, I am a firm believer one can never have too many pillows! So, the next question is, how do you know when it is time to be out with the old and in with the new, and feel excited and confident about your new purchases? As I recently discussed in an interview with Coral + Skye, there are hacks and tricks you can look for to determine when it is time to replace your pillow, and what to look for when shopping for new ones.

Here are a few key quality tricks I recommend to look out for when shopping for pillows:

  1. Does it lay flat? Perform a quick pillow test. Lay your pillow flat across your hand. Is it drooping? Or does it lay straight and flat? It should remain straight and firm, and should not be making a frown at you! If it is frowning at you, it may be time to treat yourself to a new one! This test also applies when evaluating a new one!

  2. Dog ears? Look at the corners of your pillow. Does the filling fill all the way into the corners, or are there empty spaces? If there are droopy corners, these are called dog ears, and we do not want to see these when looking for a new pillow! Instead, look for pillows in your old and in new that are completely full with quality filling.

  3. Loose threads? Lumpy? Misshapen? If any of these things ring a bell, it is time for a shopping trip. If you can, look for products with high quality materials. The higher quality the product, the better it will be for your wellbeing, and the longer it will last in the long run.

  4. Which Performance Solution is Right for Me? There are pillow solutions for with every budget from odor and freshness control to botanical enhanced. I like to suggest thinking about how you sleep and what could make you the most comfortable and happy. For example, if you are a hot sleeper, pillows with cool-touch technology could be a performance feature that would interest you! From there, density and sleep position is always an important consideration so that your pillow can give you the best support possible and in a way that you like to sleep.

For the pillow junkie looking for their next purchase, I recommend my designs, the Polar Point Cool Touch Down Alternative Pillow, or the Polar Point Down Alternative Memory Pillow as new additions to the collection! Both of these pillows from Pottery Barn are on sale for a limited time, and will meet all the criteria you should be looking for in a new pillow. These both incorporate moisture-wicking fill that will have you sleeping cool and calm. These are lightweight and provide a cool touch sleep environment.

Lastly, retailers want you to be happy with your purchase, and will many times gladly work with you to exchange your product for one that may be a better fit. Chat with a store associate and ask them what their return policy is. Shopping for new sleep products should be a fun experience. A confident purchase that makes you happy and excited to go to bed each night is going to be a great place to start your sleep wellness journey!
