Revamp Your Closet, Bed, and Life
Updated: Sep 28
Clean out your closet, freshen up your bedding, and take on the day through better sleep
There is something so satisfying about cleaning out your closet. One minute, it is bursting with outdated sweaters and jeans you have not worn in ten years. Then, after an hour or two of some organizing and sorting into donation boxes, you can once again actually see all the clothes you have!
I had to do a closet revamp myself, as I found myself going out on the town for more dinners, birthday parties and girls nights, and I realized I have not worn much other than leggings in the past year! I gave my closet a total makeover and it felt good to be out with the old and in with the new. I feel rejuvenated and empowered to make decisions.
Cleaning my room helps me feel more relaxed, and I can sleep better at night because my surroundings are neat and clean. In the same way, cleaning out my closet gave me a deep feeling of relaxation and satisfaction with my environment. I immediately noticed I felt less stress and fell asleep quicker knowing there was one more thing off my to-do list.
Tips for revamping your closet:
Give away anything that doesn’t make you feel good. As my good friend Tanji Brewer once said, wear your personality! “Clothes are an expression of what is going on the inside. They help communicate the wellness, purpose, and beauty you feel inside to everyone around you.” If your clothes don’t express who you are and don’t make you feel beautiful and confident, donate them!
Box it, but don’t give it away. Do you get easily stressed about getting rid of something you are not sure if you will want to wear again? Store it in the back of your closet for two to three months. If you don’t wear it within that time frame, you’ll know you won’t miss what’s being donated.
Toss out any duplicates. I was shocked when I weaved through and saw how many pairs of plain black pants I had! Ok, maybe not so shocking, I love them. Styles change slightly, and I find that I really only have a few pairs in rotation at a time. Pick out your 2-3 favorite pairs of whatever you have multiple of, and get rid of the rest. This is the easiest way to make space and do a deep clean and you will hardly miss the copies.
Then, once you have refreshed your closet, try refreshing your bedding to feel good about your entire bedroom and sleep environment.
Tips to refresh your bed:
Sheets: Replace any sheets that are frayed or torn with stains
Pillows: Do a pillow check. Is your pillow yellowing? That is a sign of bacterial and allergen growth, and means it is time for a new one!
Mattress pads: Do you see stains? To the trash it goes! Try this mattress pad from Sleep Number instead.
Re-fluff: Have your pillows and comforters lost their fluffiness and instead fall flat? Pop them into your dryer for a few minutes to refresh. If they still don’t look fluffy and new, it’s time to replace these too.
Looking for new pillows since yours are yellowing and flat? Try the Sleep Smart Temperature Regulating Down Alternative Pillow from Pottery Barn to refresh your sleep environment. This pillow will stay fresher for longer, and works to keep your body cool and calm through the night with the temperature regulating fibers in the fabric and fill.
Refresh your surroundings so you can feel more relaxed and get better sleep tonight, then go out and take on the world tomorrow.
